Session: Concept to Commercialization: Considerations for Process Design and Scale Up - Session 1 (Invited Talks)

The urgency of reducing carbon emissions is driving rapid innovation in the chemicals industry, along with the need to maintain business viability amid economic and geopolitical unpredictability. The success of this drive to sustainability and continued growth relies on fundamental understanding of process design and scale up elements including reaction kinetics, reactor design, heat and mass transfer considerations, solids handling etc. Industrial and academic researchers are striving to address these design challenges at laboratory scale using experimental and computational tools. However, in addition to this laboratory scale research, successful process scale-up hinges on pilot scale assessment and economic viability at commercial scale. These aspects of process development are often conducted and presented independently. Understanding the scope and challenges of a successful process scale up will not only help accelerate research but also foster industry-academia dialogue for sharing best practices. This invited session focuses on concept to commercialization of a chemical process will include speakers from industry and academia is intended to provide an integrated view of the different stages of process scale up for a given chemistry and the associated challenges.
