(40a) New Features for Lipid-Based Drug Delivery

Author

Weitz, D. - Presenter, Harvard University
This talk will describe new ways of making liposomes for drug delivery. Using an inverse-emulsion method, asymmetric liposomes are created. Each leaflet is formed separately enabling the formation of asymmetric structures, with different constituents in each. In addition, the outer leaflet can be coated with a polysaccharide, modifying its properties and providing a potential for improved targeting of the liposomes by matching specific molecules in the glycocylax of cells. These asymmetric liposomes are shown to work better for delivery of drugs, both for uptake and for endosomal release. This talk is dedicated to Bob Prud’homme who is a pioneer in liposome-based drug delivery.
