High speed video imaging has been performed to better understand the particle hydrodynamics and kinetic energy distribution of Geldart Group A and B particles in a conical jet cup [4]. Particle-particle and particle-wall interactions lead to the appearance of particle attrition. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) was used to measure the particle velocity and change in the particle velocity before, during, and after collisions. By measuring the kinematics of particle-wall interactions and how particles are recycled back into the jet, a mechanistic attrition model was developed. DEM simulations were used to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D hydrodynamics. Once this mechanistic model is in place, quantitative comparisons between jet cup results and commercial fluidized bed cyclone operations can be made.
