The absence of back-mixing combined with the increasing solids residence time in multi-stage fluidized beds creates the opportunity to perform different reaction conditions in one reactor. Back-mixing of gas and solids can be prevented effectively by baffles, resulting from the phase separation, i.e. the formation of âgas cushionâ across baffles. In present work, the equilibrium Mach number (Mae) is introduced here as the indication of dense and dilute phase in fluidization. Then, gas solids flow across a baffle is treated as equilibrium flow of gas solids mixture through a nozzle. And the principle of gas solids phase separation through a nozzle can be detected by stability analysis. Furthermore, various industrial applications with multi-stage fluidized beds are discussed in light of our model.
