Conference Abstract: Smarter Safety: How AI and Digital Tools Transform Frontline Risk Management
As part of Hydro’s journey toward HSE excellence, we have strategically embraced digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform process safety across complex industrial environments. This presentation explores real-world applications of generative AI and machine learning to improve frontline safety, decision support, and operational integrity in the aluminium sector.
The session presents practical use cases of AI-driven safety systems, including predictive incident modeling, automated root cause analysis (e.g., Fishbone from database), and computer vision applications for hazard identification. We highlight the integration of AI into existing HSE management systems to automate data processing, streamline investigations, and reduce administrative burdens, thereby enhancing visible safety leadership.
Through dynamic risk visualization tools and interactive AI assistants embedded in our digital ecosystem, we have enabled real-time learning, task-specific training, and safer human-machine collaboration. We also discuss how predictive analytics supports asset integrity monitoring and how AI-based mobile tools empower frontline personnel to capture and report risks with increased accuracy and speed.
The governance framework underpinning our AI deployment ensures compliance with GDPR and the EU AI Act, focusing on transparency, human oversight, and digital trust. Validation strategies and ethical safeguards are presented to demonstrate how data-driven safety outcomes can be responsibly achieved.
This session offers a roadmap for organizations seeking to harness the power of AI not to replace, but to enhance human capability in building safer, smarter industrial operations.
