In commercial ester processing, the ability to process a wide range of feedstock grades provides favorable economics. Often cost-effective feedstocks contain high levels of free fatty acids (FFA) or other contaminants. Traditional chemical means of processing require sulfuric acid, high proportions of alcohol to fatty acid, and the infrastructure rectify sidestreams from such process. It is now proven that the immobilized and liquid phase enzymes can be utilized for the production of various food grade esters such as squalene. This paper will evaluate the range of the cosmetic processes that could be improved using enzymatic production.
