Best Practices for High Pressure Trailers That Transport Hydrogen

As hydrogen demand increases, more hydrogen transport vehicles are being built and operated to supply fuel to the growing number of end use applications. Concurrently, recent incidents involving Multiple Element Gas Container (MEGC) hydrogen trailers have highlighted common contributing factors that have resulted in fire and/or explosions. This presentation summarizes common contributors to MEGC incidents including relief device activation and hydrogen accumulation. Potential root causes are used to inform recommendations and technical guidance for the design and operation of trailers transporting hydrogen. Although contributing factors and best practice recommendations are not specific to transportation applications, the risk of collision, high vibration, frequent filling cycles, and high occurrence of recent incidents add emphasis to the focus of this presentation.
