Distillation is the most prevalent separation technique used in the refining, petrochemicals and chemicals sectors. The energy consumption of distillation has come into the spotlight as world is working towards a change in energy sources and reduced energy consumption. in this paper the authors will evaluate various techniques for reducing the energy consumption of distillation. This will include technologies such as external and internal heat integration, heat pumps, dividing-wall towers, pressure-swing distillation, pre-separation using hybrid technologies, and the use of solvents. Technical readiness, capital cost and residual challenges will also be highlighted.
