To fulfil the requirements of PSM, robust Process Safety Information on materials and processes is needed. For many materials and processes, existing literature data can be utilized. However, for novel reactions data may be incomplete or not available. To ensure a complete understanding of Chemical Reaction Hazards, testing can be vital in understanding the risks. This can pose a challenge though, as there are many tests and tools available. To understand how to use these powerful tools, we will walk through common tests used to understand Chemical Reaction Hazards and what data each provides. This session will cover:

  • Screening tests
  • Adiabatic calorimetry
  • Reaction calorimetry
  • Vent Sizing and low Phi-factor calorimetry
  • Combustion calorimetry
