Heuristics and algorithms for optimal multi-component separations using continuous distillation columns are well established. However, solvent recovery in agrochemical and other specialty chemical companies is different from separation operations typically performed in commodity and petrochemical companies in the following ways: (a) operations are mostly batch, (b) components often form (homogeneous and heterogeneous) azeotropes, (c) dissolved and undissolved solids are common and (d) non-distillation separations are prevalent. In this presentation we will present solvent recovery design for two industrial cases and propose adaptation of common heuristics for the agrochemical industry.
