(164c) Inherently Safer Design: Success Stories
Inherently Safer Design (ISD) principles have significantly enhanced safety management in the oil and gas industry by integrating safety into the different stages of design starting from concept development to alternative selection to detailed engineering to execution, startup, and operations. This paper presents several success stories demonstrating the effective implementation of ISD principles, resulting in notable safety improvements and operational efficiencies. The case studies cover various stages of oil and gas industry operations highlighting the reduced risks, lower operational costs, improved reliability of ISD. Key ISD strategies include eliminating hazards, minimizing hazardous substances, substituting safer alternatives, moderating dangerous conditions, and simplifying processes. These proactive approaches have led to reduced risks, lower operational costs, and improved process reliability, showcasing the critical role of ISD in achieving safer and more sustainable operations in the oil and gas industry.
