Fouling of distillation towers is caused by the accumulation of solids, polymers contained in the feed streams, or from polymerization reaction occurring inside the tower. Symptoms of fouling includes gradual loss of efficiency, incremental pressure drop/ feed ratio and premature flooding. Fouling is often the limiting factor to a plant run length, hence affecting turnaround frequency. This paper discusses design, operation and turnaround strategies for minimizing the impact of undesired chemical reactions leading to fouling. The discussion suggests methodologies for recognizing occurrence of fouling and monitoring its progression.
