(34c) Implementation of a Risk Analysis-Based Business Continuity Plan to Ensure Continuous Operation of Equipment in a Cosmetics Industry Quality Control Laboratory

This study presents the successful implementation of a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) based on a structured risk analysis approach in a cosmetics industry quality control laboratory. The objective was to ensure the continuous operation of essential equipment for physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of raw materials and finished products, such as nail polish, sunscreens, shampoos, skin creams, and hair colorants.

The project's first stage involved identifying all possible equipment risk scenarios. Subsequently, the Risk Analysis Preliminary Matrix was used to categorize the identified scenarios based on their probability of occurrence and potential impact. Scenarios were classified into low, medium, and high probability, as well as in terms of their impact on analytical reliability, temporary equipment downtime, and/or permanent equipment failure.

Based on these analyses, mitigation barriers were structured to prevent the occurrence of risk scenarios. These barriers included measures such as proper completion of equipment verification forms, stricter calibration plans, detailed maintenance control, certification of external suppliers for sample analysis, and acquisition of backup equipment.

Finally, a Contingency Plan was implemented to ensure laboratory operations could be maintained in the event of a risk scenario occurrence. This plan included specific actions for each scenario, aiming for rapid recovery and continuity of analysis.

The results demonstrated significant improvement in equipment reliability and a considerable reduction in unplanned downtime. This resulted in more reliable analyses and higher quality products. Additionally, the BCP implementation strengthened the company's operational resilience, enabling continued activities even in adverse situations.

This study highlights the importance of a structured risk analysis approach in implementing a Business Continuity Plan to ensure the continuous operation of equipment in cosmetics industry quality control laboratories. The project stages may serve as a reference for other companies looking to enhance operational resilience and ensure product quality.
