Post-consumer plastics pose significant environmental challenges. The petrochemical industry is recycling waste plastics at a low recycling rate through mechanical recycling method or making fuels through chemical method. The thermal routes convert plastics to pyrolysis oil, which contains significant amounts of contaminants. In addition, these oils contain significant amount of coke precursors, which will shorten the heater run length. The challenge is how to remove these contaminants before processing them in the ethylene plant. This paper will consider recycling plastics to produce monomers by integrating Chevron Lummus Global's hydroprocessing technology and Lummus' ethylene technology.
