2025 Spring Meeting and 21st Global Congress on Process Safety

(153c) Incorporating Integrated Risk Assessments in Loss of Containment (LOC) Management during Design Phase

Process safety is paramount in industries dealing with hazardous fluids. Containing these fluids within process systems is critical to preventing accidents and protecting personnel, the environment, and assets. Loss of containment (LOC) incidents can vary from minor flange or pump seal leaks to catastrophic failures of piping or equipment, each with different consequences and frequencies.

This presentation will discuss an integrated risk assessment approach that encompasses the full range of LOC scenarios. The primary goal is to help the audience understand the various risk assessment tools, beyond the HAZOP study, commonly used in EPC projects, including their objectives and limitations. By integrating multiple risk assessment tools, EPC project teams can gain insights into the impacts of different events and develop more comprehensive and robust risk reduction strategies. The presenter will explore how these assessments contribute to the prevention and mitigation of incidents in operating facilities.
