Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) are vital for evaluating the process hazards and safety concerns of a process. However, they can also be tedious and challenging with so many voices to consider. What if it could be easier? What if there’s a way to make the process (almost) effortless?

This paper will explore the requirements of a PHA (both regulatory and best practice needs) and evaluate how to make the study easier for all those involved. The approach is to break down the required elements of a PHA and the reasons why they are done. Then, evaluate what parts are frequently “overdone” or that aren’t necessary. In addition, the paper will highlight different areas where additional resources or effort are important, depending on the individual needs of the facility and/or process.

This topic is critical for much of the industry. Facilitators, management, operations, maintenance, and contractors can all benefit from the evaluation of the process and how to make PHAs easier to complete and easier for participants. What if the PHA study process could improve and what does that look like?
