This contribution aims to answer the question whether there are differences in the occurrence, manifestations and consequences of major accidents in the EU. It draws from available data in the eMars database and from final reports on major accidents. The number of major accidents, type of incident, SEVESO status, reasons for reporting the accident to the EU, type of industry, type of equipment and damage to health were compared. It also looks at the disparities in the reported causal factors of human factors and organisational factors and highlights the need for analysis of the investigative reports carried out to date.
