Analyzing process safety risks and applying appropriate mitigations is critical to inherently safer design and maintaining an asset throughout its lifetime. While many tools exist, adopting a âLayer of Protection Analysisâ or LOPA framework is a simplified, semi-quantitative method that defines risk as a function of the frequency and consequence of an incident scenario.
Process safety and budgetary concerns are occasionally at odds; utilizing a LOPA framework can be a powerful tool to balance these two concerns and implement the plan that both provides ample process protection and is cost effective.
In this presentation, we will analyze a case study of how LOPA may be applied to a reboiler system to select the most effective tools to mitigate risk to an acceptable level.
