(31a) CO2 Utilization Technologies to Support Decarbonization Journey
Author
There is a dire need for technological innovation and disruption to meet the increasing demand for cleaner energy mix in the world and for circumventing CO2 emission impacts. This will help to meet the âNet Zeroâ target for the scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2050, but also create a âPositive Impactâ by aiming for negative emission by targeting historical emissions through the technologies like Direct Air Capture (DAC). At Qatar Shell Research and Technology Center (QSRTC), we are working on developing such technologies, in particular to support the decarbonization journey which remains a gigantic task to achieve reduction in emissions from â35Gt CO2e to Net Zeroâ.
Besides, CCS & DAC, the CO2 valorization will play an important role in decarbonization journey, as it creates new value chains and fulfills the broader goal of circularity under the sustainability vision. In fact the use of CO2 to create valuable products can contribute to reducing the high cost associated with CCS (carbon capture and storage) and support the acceleration of the decarbonization journey. This presentation will provide a high-level overview of on-going technology developments at QSRTC at different stages:
- Cargen: Co2 Utilization for The Co-Production of Carbon Nanotubes & Syngas
- Sustainable Conversion of CO2 to Organic Carbonates
- An Integrated Process for The Simultaneous Desalination of Reject Brine and CO2 Mineralization
- Semi-Continuous Reactor Engine
- Electrochemical H2 Production from Seawater using Membraneless Electrolyzer Coupled with CO2 Utilization
