Thiophene and carbon disulfide are two compounds that can cause difficulties in the steam cracking process. This presentation describes how these species are formed, the levels that are normally experienced, their impact and how they are normally managed. Thiophene and carbon disulfide are byproducts from the cracking furnaces. Both species are poisons to hydrotreating catalysts., In addition thiophene boils very closely to benzene and hence is an issue for benzene purification.
