There is an increased interest from manufacturers in various industries to recycle the wastewater (WW) they generate to reuse to meet their utility demand or even within their manufacturing processes. Typically, the water will need to be treated through many unit operations to purify it to a level it suitable for reuse. Membrane processes are nearly always required for one or more of these unit operations, but the design and operating philosophies of these systems need to take into consideration additional variables and challenges to ensure long term performance and reliability.

This joint presentation between a membrane technology manufacturer and system integrator will primarily focus on the design practices in the reuse processes for refinery WW and where ultrafiltration (UF) or membrane bioreactor (MBR), and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes fit in the overall process. Additionally, there will be some selected case studies highlighting a few examples of different industrial WW treatment projects that the presenters have been involved with. These will include examples in addition to refinery WW.
