This tutorial presentation reviews the fundamentals of process-side fouling in an ethylene unitâs acid gas removal system and fractionation train. The general mechanisms of fouling are first discussed, with a particular focus on differences between liquid- and gas-heavy feed slates. Common techniques for anticipating and monitoring the fouling of equipment are then presented. Finally, an assortment of proven ways to mitigate fouling â equipment design, process treatment, operational adjustments, and maintenance practices â are discussed.
