(53ae) Safeguard Assurance Programs within Chevron

Chevron is implementing a structured approach to improve the assurance of barriers identified through risk studies on high consequence assets. We are building a culture of ownership from line leadership through the frontline workforce. The program requires each employee understands the key barriers that prevent or mitigate major incidents and the corresponding verifications required to maintain barrier functionality

Enterprise requirements are in place through our Operational Assurance program. Elements of the program include:

  • Establishment of senior leadership level sponsors in each Operating Unit.
  • A layered assurance approach that builds upon routine workforce verifications, subject matter expert (SME) reviews, onsite leadership verification engagements, and supported by rigorous Operating Unit and Corporate level audit programs.
  • Assurance Workshops to evaluate whether each barrier is in place, how is it verified, is the verification effective and, if not, how we improve it.
  • Incorporation of Human Factor considerations into the planned verification programs.
  • Dashboards to provide an up-to-date picture of the health of key barriers.

There have been challenges to implementation across a large asset base, and within the current industry environment; this presentation will share how we overcame these challenges to strengthen and sustain our assurance program.
