The business case for a new control system is typically the combination of a lack of flexibility or expandability of the existing system, the increasing cost of maintenance, and multiple improvements to the process unit operations. It is important to realize that financial gains are not realized by just replacing the control system. Understanding the deficiencies within the operation of the process unit, and how the application of new technology can improve the deficiencies is vital. Also important to realize is that an “automation” system is made up of the field devices and software application packages beyond just a control system. Modifications of work practices must also be done to take advantage of new technology. This includes operating methods, information integration to MES and ERP functions and maintenance practices.
