Abstract
Reactive systems behave unpredictably under overpressure conditions. Varying composition impacts the physical properties and response of the mixture to temperature and time. Pressure generation in a reactive system is often a function of both vapor pressure and gas generation rate. Standard methodologies applied in non-reactive pressure relief system design cannot be relied upon to give appropriate sizing for reactive systems. Consistent with DIERS methodologies, model-based design provides accurate, reliable vent sizing. A comprehensive approach to modeling is presented which incorporates vapor-liquid equilibrium, reaction stoichiometry, and reaction rate.
