Falling film flow is a common phenomenon in chemical industry. It is widely used in chemical instruments, such as structured packed columns and falling film evaporators. An experiment was implemented to study the mass transfer phenomenon of binary-mixture (ethanol-water) falling film flows with different heating methods (uniform or concentrated heating). In order to study the detailed flow and mass transfer behaviors, a 2-D multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on volume of fluid (VOF) was developed. This model divides mass transfer into two parts: one is caused by the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and the other is caused by the heat flux. Results from simulation are inconsistent with the experimental data. Both experiments and simulations show that the ethanol concentration of the vapor with concentrated heating is 1.5% higher than the one with uniform heating.
