(55b) LNG Facility Siting Regulations - Home (USA) and Away (International)

Several LNG facilities are being proposed, designed and built around the world. These facilities will have to be designed, built and operated according to their local and national codes and standards. This paper provides an overview of the various codes, regulations and standards that govern the siting of the different types of LNG Facilities, both onshore and offshore in the U.S.A and around the world. This paper also highlights some of the siting requirements such as acceptable risk criteria, acceptable thermal radiation levels, etc. included in these regulations and standards.

Examples of the primary siting regulations for U.S. onshore LNG facilities are 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 193 and NFPA 59A, “Standard for the Production, Storage, and Handling of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)”. The design and siting standard for Europe and some facilities internationally is the European Standard, EN 1473, “Installation and equipment for liquefied natural gas - Design of onshore installations”.
