Big data, and big data analytics, have existed for some time in oil and gas, particularly in the form of seismic data analyzed using high performance computing clusters.  However, these days, data from other sources is increasing, and tools specifically designed to perform analysis on large diverse data sets have emerged. In oil and gas, high volume and high velocity data occur routinely, while data of great variety are the norm, and significant issues around data veracity exist as well.   The emergence of big data analytics in oil and gas is permitting the industry to address challenges that could not be satisfactorily handled previously. These techniques can be applied across the full value chain, from exploration to drilling to production and processing, thru shipping and handling of supply chains and trading.  This talk will examine applications of big data analytics in oil and gas as well as areas where big data analytics has not been applied but could add value.
