(28c) Distillation Packing Fundamentals
Distillation packings are widely used in industrial distillation columns, particularly for low-pressure-drop applications. Distillation packings are generally classified as random packings, structured packings, and grids.
A brief history of packings, and basic performance characteristics, such as HETP, pressure drop, and capacity, and liquid distribution quality are reviewed. Guidelines on the performance differences between random and structured packings will be discussed.
Packed columns are equipped with liquid distributors to ensure uniform distribution of the liquid over the packed bed. Good liquid distributors are very important for effective packed column performance. An understanding of the fundamentals of packings and liquid distributors is the key to successful design, operation, and troubleshooting of packed distillation columns.
In this paper, packing physical characteristics, installation, and applications are discussed. Video footage prepared by FRI will be shown to illustrate the basics of packings and distributors.
