The world’s energy demand is growing far more rapidly than the energy industries can supply, so alternative resources are being investigated. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the alternatives being explored. Recent advancements in technology have given energy companies the ability to transport and deliver LNG long distances. Because of the limited capacity in existing import LNG terminals, Floating Storage and Regasification Unit(FSRU) has become economical for exploring, transporting and delivering LNG and has been recently spotlighted.

The core facility of FSRU is regasification system. Regasification system is basically composed of LNG HP booster pump for pressurizing and LNG/Heating medium heat exchanger for vaporizing LNG. The capacity and number of system will be determined by required regasification terminal capacity. Hyundai FSRU adopts sea water as heating medium type.

The paper presents advanced design features of FSRU developed by HHI. In this study, the optimal operating conditions for LNG FSRU using sea water heating type were determined by considering the dynamic simulation and hydraulic study. Additionally, risk assessment and economic evaluation are conducted for efficient risk based design.
