(116b) Scale up Techniques and Traps from Small Scale Systems
The objective of commercial scale industrial plant operation is to efficiently make one or more products over a long period of time in order to create cash flow for investors. When scaling up a technology the objective of a pilot plant is to obtain data over a short period of time that can be used to minimize technical and financial risk of subsequent larger scale designs of the same process. The objective of one is to accumulate money and that of the other is to accumulate knowledge. The logical conclusion is that different design and fabrication methods must be applied to each of the scales in order to achieve their respective objectives. Following a discussion of the differences in objectives between pilot plant and full scale design the presenter will outline practical techniques for minimizing technical and financial risk, and highlight important traps to be avoided when designing your pilot plant.
