(83b) Managing Careers in Consulting and Engineering
Consulting companies and engineering firms offer engineers a wide range of career opportunities in management. The skills required in management include technical (hard) skills and people (soft) skills. A career development model is presented providing insight into the progression from college graduate to senior management. It is important to recognize the difference between management and leadership. Companies need both, and the two roles call for slightly different skill sets. At the core of successful leadership and management is an absolute commitment to engineering ethics; service before profit, the honor and standing of the profession before personal advantage, public welfare above all other considerations.
