(82d) Process Intensification through Distillation Synthesis, Dividing Wall Columns, and Novel Recycle Methods
Abstract: Process Intensification through Distillation Synthesis and Novel Recycle Methods
This presentation will describe the successful efforts to reduce the capital and energy intensity of the Propane Nitration Process as practiced by Angus Chemical, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company. These process changes were captured and granted patent protection with the granting of patents US8123843, US8431754, and US8558039.
The first part of the presentation will describe the development of intensification methods in the finishing section, and the implementation of Dividing Wall Column technology (DWC) in the finishing section of the process. The implementation of this technology will result in the reduction in energy requirements of 27% over the incumbent process. The presentation will also cover some of the hurdles and barriers that must be overcome in order for this type of technology to have a successful implementation to commercial practice.
Furthur studies resulted in uncovering additional opportunities for process intensification and cost reduction. New and novel methods of recycling the aqueous organic stream back to the process resulted in substantial energy reductions, as well as inventory reductions and energy reductions.
