(19a) Acid Gas Removal Unit: The Challenge of Deep COS Removal

The design of the Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU) is dependent on parameters such as feed gas conditions and the desired specifications to be achieved. Whereas the removal of CO₂ and H₂S were key design parameters in the past, increasingly sour gases also now contain considerable amounts of carbonyl sulfide (COS).

COS is one of the potential sulfur containing components in natural gas processing and as such has to be removed for safety and environmental reasons. Due to the chemical and physical properties of the molecule, the removal can be challenging especially when a deep sulfur removal specification is being targeted.
