Understanding Data Requirements

Too often, there is a lack of sufficient thought with respect to developing data collection systems and work processes within process operating plants. Data is collected due to regulatory requirements, both internal and external, or someone thinks they might need it someday. This paper takes the viewpoint that data collection systems should be intelligently designed so as to support specific activities that are defined in advance of developing the data collection system. It stands to reason that if you do not know for what purpose you are going to use the data, it is hit or miss as to whether the data collected is useful. A brief overview of the CCPS PERD work process is provided to establish a sound foundation and then the paper illustrates the basics of data organization that will improve its usefulness for analysis once it has been collected, allowing for more cost effective analysis designed to provide value. The paper will also briefly discuss how the PERD ladder of success can allow a company to gain some benefit starting with whatever data they currently have and over time continuously improve the quality and value of their data.
