As more refineries are expanding their crude selection it is important to look at more than the assay information. Understanding the operability issues of the new crude is paramount. One important aspect is the impact on corrosion in the overhead circuits of Crude and Vacuum towers. Overhead simulation modeling can be used successfully to assess the impacts new crude may have on a tower overhead system. This presentation will outline some of the key guidelines and limitations of an overhead simulation modeling program. Some of the items that will be discussed will be data quality, sampling techniques, and interpretation of results with respect to actual field experience. Examples of how use of an overhead simulation model was able to detect potential increases in corrosivity are discussed.
