Heat influx through piping or storage tank walls is one of the most concerning issues in designing cryogenic liquid handling facilities, such as regasification facilities and LNG liquefaction plants. Many efforts have been made to reduce the radiation heat transfer into LNG by such means as installing multilayer insulation around the inner pipe. The Vacuum Jacketed Pipe (VJP) further reduces conductive heat transfer into the LNG. The VJP design innovations are incorporated for all cryogenic fluids to achieve a highly efficient insulation method that can not be achieved by any other conventional insulation method available today.
This paper presents the mechanical and thermodynamic features of the newly developed vacuum jacket pipe, Technical issues, such as design features, insulation efficiency, field fabrication procedure, and comparison of field fabrication period will also be addressed. This paper also presents an economic comparison of each insulation system.
