(67a) Quench Oil Fire in Cracking Furnace
Author
Williams, M. A. - Presenter, Eastman Chemical Company
In November, 2005, Eastman's Hydrocarbon Cracking Plant #4 experienced a major fire in one of the cracking furnaces, destroying the furnace and causing damage to surrounding furnaces. The fire was caused by a series of unusual events which led to large quantities of quench oil entering the furnace firebox while the furnace was being shut down. This paper will focus on the series of events which led to the fire and upon the corrective actions taken to prevent such an event from reoccurring.
