Due to the rapid increase of the petroleum price in the international market, the costs for small scale peak-shaving style power plants that use diesel as fuel are increased. This results in operation difficulties for the power plants, some even come across a loss. In the past two years, some peak shaving power plants start to explore the possibility of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) to replace diesel. The situation of peak shaving power plants in China is introduced in this paper. Some of the designing schemes, practices and effects of using LNG alternate fuel are described. At the same time, development of the LNG industry in China is also introduced briefly and the future of using LNG in peak shaving power plants is discussed.
