Thermochemical water-splitting IS process has been studied as the next generation large-scale hydrogen production method. One of the big issues at stake in this process is to get over HI azeotrope concentration. Up to now, extractive distillation and reactive distillation have both been proposed to deal with this issue. However, these methods increase too much the complexity of the system. Consequently, we have proposed a simple, efficient way of concentrating HI by using electrodialysis. Compared to water electrolysis, HI electrodialysis can be done using a low voltage (approximately 0.2 V). However, the efficiency of the concentration is decreased by high permeation rate of H2O through the membrane. Using a membrane made by the radiation-induced Graft polymerization method, which method is also considered for the methanol fuel cell, we expect to improve the overall thermal efficiency of IS process by 3 %.
