(350b) XL Batteries – Organic Flow Energy Storage

Author

Transforming the grid and meeting power demand from expanding industries like cloud services and artificial intelligence requires safe, low-cost and reliable energy storage. XL Batteries uses the power of Organic Chemistry to create a grid-scale battery that will meet rising demand, bolster grid resilience, and enable the transition from fossil fuels to renewable generation. We will be global leaders with a product that can meet any energy storage need.

Founded at Columbia University in 2019, XL Batteries has developed a highly-stable, pH-neutral electrolyte that can be used as a replacement for the expensive or corrosive solutions currently used in redox flow batteries. Pairing XL Batteries’ chemistry with an established, mature energy storage technology already at the largest scale opens a rapid, low risk path to commercialization. XL Batteries has advanced from the laboratory to the demonstration scale, with an integrated energy storage system in operation at a customer’s site since early 2025.

Deployed broadly, XL’s Organic Flow Batteries will enable the expansion of renewable power generation, reduce dependence on foreign oil and mitigate the effects of burning fossil fuels for energy generation. XL Batteries is leveraging the unique properties of organic chemistry to help address global climate change – the biggest challenge facing our planet.
