In this work, we employ experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate the origin of the enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity of 0D/2D C100/FGT, which has demonstrated remarkable HER catalytic activity as a metal-free catalyst, achieving an overpotential (η10) of 112 mV vs. RHE and a very low onset potential of −84 mV vs. RHE. This work addresses fundamental questions regarding how interfacial electron transfer in heterostructures can achieve high-performance HER electrocatalysis.
