(95f) Tail Gas Treatment Process Development in the Steel Industry

The steel industry needs to reduce SOx emissions due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations. In particular, a large amount of sulfur exists in the form of H2S, and the gas with a high concentration is tail gas. We have developed an eco-friendly process for Tail Gas purification. The facility converts SO2 and sulfur components in tail gas into H2S using Co-Mo catalysts and captures the converted H2S using tertiary amines. We have constructed a tail gas treatment processe with capacity of 4,000 Nm3/h and completed commissioning to verify the H2S removal efficiency. This is the first commercial application in the steel industry and can contribute to reducing air pollution. Tail gas heating is required for catalyst use, and currently, it is operated using burners, but we plan to research the application of clean energy, steam.
