Chemical engineers, and our forebears, have conceptualized and built chemical processes for centuries. Many of the early processes could be described as a recipe for taking valuable raw materials and turning them mostly into toxic waste. During the 20th century, a more systematic, and successful, approach emerged that we call Process Synthesis. The formal beginning of the field of process synthesis can be easily dated to the landmark book titled, Process Synthesis, by Rudd, Powers and Siirola, published in 1973. In this presentation, we pay tribute to more than 60 years of research and development in the field by Jeffrey Siirola.
