Ventilation is a critical mitigative measure intended to reduce or eliminate the risk of a fire or explosion in pilot plants. However, while frequently specified and always relied upon to reduce the risk, it is often not carefully specified nor its effectiveness adequately evaluated. A key issue is to ensure the area in question is fully swept of hazardous gases and vapors so that no accumulation can build up. This paper will present issues the author has seen regarding the effectiveness of many designs in this regard. Common problems will be identified. Practical realistic suggestions will be offered to help ensure the system works as intended.
