Mass transfer is the fundamental rate-limit for gas fermentation. While traditionally these challenges are addressed by increasing gas solubility through sparging and pressurization, CarbonBridge has developed a novel bioreactor with a direct-gas interface. This modular, planar design utilizes immobilized microbes on a porous substrate in a direct-gas atmosphere, with alternating gas and liquid delivery, thereby eliminating mass transfer limitations while simultaneously ensuring gas and nutrient access. Consequently, a >500% increase in microbe productivity (g product / g DCW / h) can be achieved and scaled via linearity.
