(331c) Lessons Learned While Raising a Teenaged Laboratory in Materials Science

Author

Jessica Schiffman - Presenter, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Engineering professors lead cutting-edge research laboratories, mentor students, teach courses, and serve on departmental and university committees. They also engage in outreach, contribute to professional societies, foster collaborations, and take on numerous other responsibilities. At the heart of all these roles is leadership, a skillset that can be strengthened and refined. In this talk, I will share my own perspective on leadership, drawing from experiences such as running a collaborative research laboratory, serving as the interim department head of chemical engineering and as the deputy editor of ACS Applied Engineering Materials. Additionally, having just graduated from the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Science (ELATES) program, I will share some insights that I have gained from that community. This presentation will be informal, and I look forward to learning from your insights just as much as I hope to share mine.
