We describe how hydrotalcite precursors containing Ni or Co can be used to create high loaded metal catalysts. The metal dispersion (i.e. particles about 100A in diameter is created by having alumina “chunklets” decorate the metal particles after reduction of the hydrotalcite or in the case of Ni, an intermediate rock-salt phase. The paper discusses the characterization of the metal catalysts and different ways that the hydrotalcite can be synthesized.
