Electrochemical technologies increasingly rely on ionomer membranes to mediate selective ion transport while maintaining electronic isolation between electrodes. This tutorial will illustrate elements of the underlying chemistry and physics including connecting molecular design and characterization to applications of mono- and bipolar membranes in electrolysis of water and other species and for separations via electrodialysis. Recent examples from our own work will be highlighted in this pedagogical context.
