The authors report the key findings of the “Formulation Science and Engineering for the Common Good” workshop they organized on May 31-June 1, 2024 in Arlington, VA, USA, with participation by about forty researchers from academia, industry, and national labs in the United States, and support from the US National Science Foundation. The Formulation workshop aimed to (i) highlight the potential of fundamental research on complex fluids and soft matter toward the development of formulations with new or alternative ingredients that benefit consumers, suppliers, and the environment alike, (ii) chart a path toward addressing the open questions that have to be answered in order to fully develop this potential, and (iii) foster academia-industry interactions and the translation of academic research into industrial practice. Presentations and discussions during the Formulation workshop were organized in the following themes: Formulation Science and Practice; Approaches that may Change Current Practice; Biobased Ingredients and Sustainability; Modeling; Lab Automation and Data Analytics; Education and Workforce Development.
